Commander John S. Phillips receiving the Navy Cross for valor on Pearl Harbor
along with 62 others. 

John S. Phillips was in his late 40’s at the time and had graduated Hackensack High School in 1914. There is a “Jack” Phillips listed on the Original Wall Unit and could very well be
him because back then “Jack” was a common nickname for John... why, I have no idea. 
President John F. Kennedy was known to friends as “Jack”. For that reason,
we will add his name as it is written in the paper as John S. Phillips.
